Rehability – Top Sellers in February

Our customers were getting ready to go out and about in February – we sold lots of ferrules.  It’s important to check for wear on ferrules as they wear unevenly and become slippery when wet.  Flexyfoot ferrules have a specially designed flexible ferrule which maintains an even grip even when the stick is placed at an angle.  See our web site for details of Flexyfoot canes and ferrules.

Here are some of our other top sellers in February:-

·         Helping hands or reachers

·         Beakers

·         Pressure cushions, bed wedges and mattress tilters

·         Bed pads - washable

·         Grab rails

·         Slippers

·         Wheelchairs

·         Scooters

·         Electric lift recliner chairs

We have some great garden tools in stock by Radius who have manufactured trowels and hand forks designed to minimise hand and wrist stress.  The ergonomic handles have a non-slip covering which is effective even when wet.  A high quality tool sold with a life time guarantee.

Let’s get planting for Spring!

EQUIPMENT: An aid to independent living, not a disability!

 ‘Time out’ at Halesworth Library

Every Wednesday, from 10.30-12.00, Halesworth library have Time out; a friendly and informal group were they have guest speakers.

I had the privilege of being the guest speaker on the first Wednesday in October. Having been introduced as an occupational therapist from Rehability “solutions for independent living”, I had some explaining to do!  Thankfully, I was greeted by a warm and friendly group of people all interested and keen to listen.

After giving a short introduction about myself and an explanation of what an occupational therapist is, we opened a discussion regarding people’s experiences of disability and the need s of equipment and therapy that might aid their independent living. My goal for the group was to challenge them to talk about the stigma that is attached to equipment and therapy. Occupational therapy is not a profession exclusive for the elderly. The following reproduced from the college of occupational therapists describes who occupational therapists are and what they do.

‘Occupational Therapists are health and social care professionals who help people of all ages - babies, children, adults and older people - to carry out activities they need or want to do, but are prevented from doing so as a result of physical or mental illness, disability, or the effects of aging.

Activities can include the necessities of daily living such as getting dressed, preparing a meal and going to work, or simply continuing with a favourite hobby. Occupational Therapists will work with individuals to help them find alternative ways to carry on with activities to enable them to live life their way.’

I had the opportunity to take a wide sample of equipment that is available from our shop Rehability to illustrate my talk, ranging from a bra fastener and tap turner to a kettle tipper. The group had fun testing the equipment and in some cases, guessing what it was. It was a great experience, which helped the group understand that equipment is not a badge of disability but provides “solutions to independent living”.

Champagne and Holy Water flows at store opening
Corks popped and holy water was sprinkled when Halesworth celebrated the arrival of its latest high street retailer.
Guests from across the community joined proprietor Veronica Downing and her staff at a party to mark the opening of Rehability, suppliers of aids and equipment to elderly and disabled people. And performing the opening ceremony was Rev. Jan Bunday of the Blyth Valley Team Ministry, who blessed the new enterprise and liberally sprinkled holy water over the assembled partygoers.
Visitors included representatives from Age Concern, Halesworth Business Connections and Halesworth Town Council, plus other traders from the Thoroughfare. All gathered to offer their goodwill to Rehability, which opened its doors at 7 Bridge Street on Wednesday 8 May 2013.
“This is a very exciting venture for all of us,” said Veronica. “We have operated out of our own Independent Living Centre in Chediston for six years, but it is clear that the centre of Halesworth is the place to be. I hope that we will now be able to provide a real service to elderly and disabled people, plus their families and their carers, here in north east Suffolk.”
Rehability offers a wide range of aids and equipment, from simple gadgets to assist with daily living activities, right up to powered mobility scooters. The store will also offer wheelchair and scooter repairs and maintenance.
